This page is for you if you run a shop, a workshop, a bakery or a market stall around Mansfield, you have thought about selling online for a while, and every conversation you have had about it has been full of words like "omnichannel" and "conversion funnel".

Here is the plain version. An online shop is a website that takes payments. You need photographs of what you sell, a description and price for each thing, a way to take card payments, and a plan for how it gets to the customer. That is genuinely it.

The bit worth thinking hard about is not the website. It is the packing, the postage cost, and who is going to do it on a Tuesday when you are already busy. We would rather have that conversation with you before you spend anything.

## What you get

### An honest conversation first

Before we quote, we work out roughly what you would need to sell each month for this to be worth the effort. Sometimes the answer is that a good website with a phone number would serve you better than a shop. We would rather tell you that.

### A shop you can add products to yourself

Adding a new item should take three minutes: photo, title, price, description, save. If you need to ring us every time you get new stock, we have built it wrong.

### Card payments sorted

We set up the payment side, explain the fees in pounds rather than percentages, and make sure the money lands in your bank account without you having to chase it.

### Postage that does not lose you money

Working out real postage costs is where new online sellers most often get burnt. We set up delivery pricing based on what it actually costs you to send things, including packaging.

### Product photography if you need it

Phone photos on a cluttered counter cost you sales. We can shoot your range properly, or show you how to do a decent job yourself with a window and a sheet of white card.

### Someone to ring

For the first few months you will have questions. That is normal and it is included — you are not on your own with a login and a PDF.

## What it actually costs to run

Beyond the build, budget for these. We would rather you knew now.

- Platform or hosting: £5 to £70 a month depending on which route we take
- Card processing: typically 1.4% to 2.9% plus 20p per transaction
- Packaging: usually 40p to £2 an order, and easy to forget entirely
- Your time: realistically two to five hours a week once orders start
- Marketing: optional at first, but nobody finds a brand-new shop by accident

## Should you sell on a marketplace instead?

For some businesses, starting on Etsy, eBay or Amazon makes more sense than building your own shop. There are already buyers there, so you get sales sooner, which is a genuine advantage when you are testing whether the idea works.

The catch is fees of 10% to 15% and no relationship with the customer — they bought from Etsy, not from you. Most of the businesses we work with end up doing both: a marketplace for reach, and their own shop for margin and repeat customers.

We are happy to advise on that even if it means we build you a smaller website.

## What affects the price

Starting price: From £750 (excluding VAT).

- How many products you are starting with
- Whether you need photography taking
- Whether you are posting items or offering local collection
- Whether you want to keep using your existing till system

## Local context — Mansfield

Mansfield has a genuinely good independent retail scene — the market, the makers, the food producers, the specialists on Leeming Street and around the Four Seasons. A lot of them sell brilliantly face to face and have never taken a penny online.

For that kind of business, the version that usually works is a modest shop with your best-selling twenty items, local collection alongside postage, and enough Google visibility that people looking for what you make can actually find you. Not a 500-product megastore.

## Frequently asked questions

### I have never sold online. Is this going to be too complicated?

If you can use email and take a photograph on a phone, you can run an online shop. The complicated parts — payments, security, tax settings, delivery rules — are things we configure once and you never touch again.

### How much do I need to sell to make it worthwhile?

As a rough guide, if the shop costs £750 to build and £30 a month to run, you would want it generating around £100 of profit a month within the first year to feel comfortable. We will do that sum properly with your actual margins before you commit.

### Can I sell online and still run my shop?

Yes, and it is very common. We can link the two so stock levels stay in step, and offer click-and-collect so online customers still come through your door.

### What about VAT and tax?

The shop can be configured to handle VAT correctly whether or not you are registered, and to produce the records your accountant needs. We are not accountants, so for anything beyond configuration we will point you at one.

### What if it does not work?

Then you have a website, a product catalogue and photographs you can use elsewhere, and you have learned something for a few hundred pounds rather than tens of thousands. We will also tell you before we start if we think it is unlikely to work.
