Google Analytics Setup in Mansfield
Most businesses have Google Analytics installed and have never once used it to make a decision. That is not a discipline problem — it is because the default setup measures almost nothing useful.
Out of the box, GA4 tells you how many people visited and roughly where from. That is interesting once and useless thereafter, because it does not connect to anything you can act on.
A properly configured install tells you which pages produce enquiries, which produce nothing, which traffic sources are worth money, and what a customer actually costs you to acquire. Those are decisions.
It also filters out the spam and bot traffic that makes small-site numbers meaningless, which on a local business site can be a third of the total.
What you get
Conversions defined and tracked
Form submissions, phone taps, email clicks, booking completions, downloads. Whatever counts as a result for your business, measured as one.
Google Tag Manager, set up cleanly
So future changes do not need a developer, and so scripts can be added without slowing the site down or breaking it.
Spam and internal traffic filtered
Your own visits, your developer’s, and the referral spam that inflates small-site numbers. Without this the data is not just imprecise, it is misleading.
Search Console connected
So you can see actual search queries alongside behaviour, which is where most of the useful insight lives.
A report you will actually open
One dashboard answering: how many enquiries, from where, at what cost, and which pages caused them. Not the default interface.
Consent handled properly
Analytics that only runs after consent, configured to work with your cookie banner rather than around it.
The four numbers that matter
Almost everything else is noise for a local business:
- Enquiries per month, by source. The only number that maps to revenue.
- Conversion rate by page. Which pages persuade people and which lose them.
- Cost per enquiry, where you are paying for traffic.
- Which search queries brought people who then converted, as opposed to which brought traffic.
What we usually find wrong
The most common problems, in order: no conversions configured at all, so the account measures visits and nothing else. Phone taps untracked, which for a trade business means most enquiries are invisible. The tracking code installed twice, doubling every figure. And internal traffic unfiltered, so a five-person office looks like meaningful demand.
Any one of these makes the data actively misleading, which is worse than having none.
What affects the price
From £95 is a genuine starting point, not a teaser. Here is what moves it, so you can work out roughly where you would land before you ring us.
- How many conversion actions need tracking
- Whether Google Tag Manager needs setting up as well
- Ecommerce tracking, which is considerably more involved
- Whether historical data needs migrating or auditing
Why local matters here
Google Analytics Setup — the Mansfield picture
For local service businesses the phone is the main conversion and it is the one almost nobody tracks. If half your enquiries come from someone tapping the number on a phone and that is not recorded, every judgement you make about what is working is based on the other half.
It is a twenty-minute fix and it changes the picture more than anything else we do in an analytics setup.

Google Analytics Setup — your questions
Is Google Analytics free?
Yes, GA4 is free for the volumes any local business will ever reach. You pay for setup and interpretation, not for the tool.
Can you track phone calls?
Taps on a phone number link, yes, straightforwardly. Tracking calls that come from someone reading the number and dialling manually needs call tracking with dedicated numbers, which is a separate and more expensive thing — worth it above a certain volume, not below.
Is GA4 compliant with UK GDPR?
It can be, configured correctly: consent required before tracking, IP anonymisation, sensible data retention. We set it up that way. If you would rather avoid the question entirely, there are privacy-first alternatives like Plausible or Fathom and we are happy to use those instead.
My numbers dropped after you set it up. Why?
Almost always because the previous setup was counting bots, internal visits, or the same visit twice. The new number is smaller and correct, which is more useful than a larger wrong one.
