Selling online

Amazon, eBay & Etsy Management in Mansfield

Marketplaces have millions of ready buyers and take 10% to 15% for the privilege. Whether that is a good trade depends entirely on your margins.

The case for marketplaces is straightforward: the buyers are already there. You are not spending months building traffic — you list, and people find it.

The case against is equally straightforward: fees of 10% to 15%, no relationship with the customer, and a platform that can change the rules or suspend you without much recourse. They bought from Amazon, not from you.

Most product businesses we work with end up doing both — marketplaces for reach and volume, their own shop for margin and repeat custom. The mistake is relying entirely on one.

What you get

The maths first

Your actual margin after fees, postage and packaging on each product. Some items make money on a marketplace and some lose it, and you should know which before listing.

Listings optimised for each platform’s search

Amazon, eBay and Etsy each rank listings differently. Titles, attributes and keywords need writing for the platform rather than copied across.

Stock synced across channels

Overselling is the classic marketplace failure and it damages your account metrics, which affects visibility. Automated sync prevents it.

Account health watched

Late dispatch, defect rate and response time all affect visibility, and all can drift without anyone noticing until a warning arrives.

Photography that meets the rules

Each platform has specific image requirements. Non-compliant images suppress listings quietly rather than rejecting them loudly.

A route to your own shop

Everything the platform rules permit for encouraging repeat customers to buy direct next time. The rules are strict and worth knowing precisely.

Which platform suits what

  • Amazon — highest volume, highest fees, most competitive. Best for products with clear demand and defensible margins.
  • eBay — lower fees, better for used, spares, niche and higher-value items. Auction still works for genuinely scarce things.
  • Etsy — handmade, personalised and vintage only. Enforced, and excellent for the right maker.
  • Facebook Marketplace — free, local, and genuinely effective for bulky items where delivery is the obstacle.
  • Your own shop — highest margin, hardest traffic. The long game that everything else should feed.

The fee conversation nobody has upfront

Amazon referral fees are typically 8% to 15% depending on category, before FBA storage and fulfilment. eBay final value fees are around 10% to 12%. Etsy takes a listing fee, a transaction fee and payment processing.

On a product with a 20% margin, a 12% fee takes most of the profit. That is not an argument against marketplaces — it is an argument for knowing the number before you list, which a surprising number of sellers do not.

Why local matters here

Amazon, eBay & Etsy Management — the Mansfield picture

Several Mansfield makers and small manufacturers we work with started on a marketplace to test whether there was demand, then built their own shop once they knew there was. That is a sensible order and it removes most of the risk.

It also means the product photography, descriptions and pricing are already done by the time the shop gets built, which makes the build cheaper.

Amazon, eBay & Etsy Management — your questions

Should I sell on Amazon or build my own shop?

If you are testing whether there is demand, a marketplace first — you find out in weeks rather than months. If you have proven demand and reasonable margins, your own shop is where the profit is. Most businesses eventually do both.

How much do marketplaces cost?

Amazon typically 8% to 15% referral plus FBA costs if used. eBay around 10% to 12%. Etsy roughly 6.5% plus listing and payment fees. Always calculate on your actual product before listing.

Can I sell the same stock on my own shop and a marketplace?

Yes, and you should sync stock levels or you will oversell. There are pricing rules to be aware of — some platforms restrict advertising a lower price elsewhere.

Can I get marketplace customers to buy direct next time?

Within limits. The platforms restrict what you can include in packaging and messaging, and breaching those rules risks suspension. There are compliant approaches and we stick to them.
